Mondello is a suburb (quartier) of Palermo . It is located north of Monte Pellegrino on the bay between Monte Pellegrino and Monte Gallo .

history

The Kurhaus (stabilimento balneare), built on stilts over the sea

Mondello was originally a fishing village , of which a fortified tower from the 15th century has been preserved. It was at the north end of the bay. At the beginning of the 20th century, wealthy Palermitans built their villas here. Some Art Nouveau buildings are still preserved, e.g. B. the Villa Dagnino (1914), the Villa Pojero (1915) and the Kurhaus ( stabilimento balneare, 1912) in the sea. The Villino Gregorietti, which was built in 1923 according to a design by Ernesto Basile in Piazza Valdesi, is the last building in this style. After the Second World War, tourism increased by leaps and bounds. Nevertheless, Mondello has essentially retained its character as a garden city .

present

The beach

Today the place is mainly known as a seaside resort with an approximately 1.5 km long sandy beach , which is very popular with tourists as well as the Palermitans themselves. However, some travel guides describe the beach as very crowded.

From Mondello there are two entrances to the adjacent nature reserve Riserva naturale orientata Capo Gallo .
