history
Ainu , the natives of Japan, gave the island the name Todo-moshiri ("Sea Lion Island"). In the 18th century, the island came under the rule of a daimyo from the Matsumae fief . During this time it was given the current name Moneron when the French navigator Jean-François de La Pérouse named it after one of his seamen. The island was later renamed Kaiba-tō ( 海馬 島 , "Sea Lion Island") by the Japanese . After the end of the Second World War and the occupation by the Soviet Union , the island got its European name Moneron again.
55 km away from the island collapsed in 1983 shot down by Soviet interceptors Boeing 747 of Korean Airlines Flight 007 in the Sea of Japan.
