Swell:

The Cologne Freight Bypass Railway is a main railway line in the south of Cologne in North Rhine-Westphalia , continuously double-track and electrified .

The railway line runs over the Cologne South Bridge , it connects the left Rhine line , the Cologne South passenger station and the Cologne Eifeltor freight station on the left side of the Rhine with the Sieg line , the high-speed Cologne – Rhine / Main line , the right Rhine line , and the Cologne-Kalk Nord marshalling yards and Gremberg on the right bank of the Rhine.

Offer

The route is mainly used by freight trains so that they do not have to pass through Cologne Central Station.

There is no access point with passenger traffic along the route, but as part of the expansion of the Cologne S-Bahn along the west ring, there are plans to also run it over the south bridge.

Until the expansion of the Cologne Messe / Deutz train station , the bypass line was used by Intercity Express trains from Düsseldorf or Wuppertal to the high-speed route Cologne – Rhine / Main , on the one hand to avoid a change of direction in Cologne Central Station , on the other hand to avoid the overloaded and in sections Hohenzollern Bridge, which can only be driven at 30 km / h, does not have to pass twice.

At the moment, apart from individual ICE and EuroNight trains, the bypass line for passenger traffic is only used on an unscheduled basis, for example in the event of disruptions or construction work on the actual route. Regardless of this, the route is not assigned to a course book route , in the internal book timetable of Deutsche Bahn AG it can be found under number 339.
