Monika Christmann (born November 5, 1959 in Montabaur ) is a beverage technologist , oenologist and heads the Institute for Oenology at the Geisenheim University . From July 2015 to July 6, 2018 she was President of the International Organization for Vine and Wine (Organization Internationale de la Vigne et du Vin, OIV).

Life

Monika Christmann studied beverage technology from 1980 to 1983 at the Geisenheim university of the then Wiesbaden University of Applied Sciences. At the Justus Liebig University in Giessen , she completed a degree in oenology, which she successfully completed in 1985 with her diploma. In 1988 she received her doctorate with a thesis on "Changes in ingredients with special consideration of the wine aromas in the dealcoholization of wines with combined dialysis - vacuum distillation ".

She began her practical work as a quality manager in research and development at H. Sichel Söhne GmbH in Alzey . From 1991 to 1993 she worked as laboratory manager and "winemaker" at the Simi Winery in California . In 1994 Monika Christmann took over the management of the cellar management department at the Geisenheim research institute. At the same time, she was Professor of Cellar Management at the Wiesbaden University of Applied Sciences in the viticulture and beverage technology course. She has continued both activities since 1994 - now at the Geisenheim University and in the Institute for Oenology. She is also a lecturer at the Justus Liebig University in Giessen. Her research activities focus on issues such as alcohol management in wine production and allergenic wine treatment products .

Monika Christmann has been a member of the German delegation at the OIV since 1995. From 2004 to 2010 she was chairman of the wine technology committee, from 2009 to 2010 president of the oenology commission and from 2012 the second deputy of the president of the OIV, Claudia Quini from Argentina . On the occasion of the meeting of the Scientific and Technical Committee of the OIV on October 27, 2011, she was awarded the "Chevalier de l ' ordre du Mérite agricole " by the French Ministry of Agriculture. At the 13th General Assembly of the International Organization for Vine and Wine during the "38th World Congress of Vine and Wine" in Mainz in July 2015, Monika Christmann was elected as the new President with 99% approval of the voting members. In this function, she represents the interests of 45 countries worldwide in the fields of vines, wine, beverages containing wine, table grapes, raisins and other vine products. According to the statutes, Christmann takes the office of vice-president from Regina Vanderlinde, her successor as OIV president.
