Monika Simmler

Monika Simmler (born January 12, 1990 in St. Gallen ) is a Swiss politician and legal scholar .

Political career

Simmler's political career began with her election to the Co-Presidium of the Young Socialists in the canton of St. Gallen in April 2008. Before that, she was elected to the management of the SP canton of St. Gallen in 2007. When she was elected to the management of JUSO Switzerland in 2009 , she also became an ex officio member of the management of the Social Democratic Party of Switzerland . At the end of November 2011 she resigned from office at the federal level, and in May 2012 she no longer took office as President of JUSO in the canton of St. Gallen.

In autumn 2011, Simmler ran as the SP's top candidate in the National Council elections. In the autumn of the following year, Simmler was elected to the city parliament in the St. Gallen city parliament elections. After Claudia Friedl resigned from the presidium of the SP Canton St. Gallen, Simmler also became President of the SP Canton St. Gallen. She held this office for four years until her resignation in April 2016.

In February 2016, Simmler was also elected to the Cantonal Council, where she belongs to the SP-Greens parliamentary group. After her election to the Cantonal Council, Simmler resigned from the city parliament, and JUSO politician Andrea Scheck took her place.

Professional career

Simmler completed a law degree and obtained a doctorate in criminal law and criminology from the University of Zurich . From 2014 to 2016 she was an assistant at the University of St. Gallen . She then worked as a visiting researcher first at Columbia University and then at the University of Oxford . She is currently a visiting researcher at the University of Vienna .

Private

Simmler lives in St. Gallen. She has Swiss and Austrian citizenship.
