Monkeys (Chair)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Monkeys (Chair) is a sculpture by the American artist Jeff Koons (dimensions: 284.5 × 58.4 × 73.7 cm; material: polychrome aluminum, wood, straw), which was made in 2003 as part of the series “Popeye " originated. Today it is in the Uli Knecht collection.

description

The sculpture is a seemingly surreal combination of everyday objects. Three monkeys in the look of inflatable toy figures are hooked into one another at their hands and feet and form a horizontally hanging chain. A white-framed country house chair with a wicker seat is attached to the foot of the lowest monkey. The sculpture illustrates Koons' interest in children's toys, which is particularly evident in the “Popeye” series in the use of animal-shaped swimming aids. The monkey chain is also reminiscent of the “Barrel of Monkeys” puzzle, the aim of which is to hook plastic monkeys together in the longest possible chain. Monkeys (Chair) illustrates Koons' efforts to mix conceptual and serial art with elements of pop culture and craft in his work .

technology

The monkey figures in Monkeys (Chair) are made of polychromed aluminum . The aluminum was shaped from the prints of inflatable toy monkeys. The transfer of the toy figures into another material gives the arrangement the necessary statics to be able to carry the chair at the lower end.

effect

Jeff Koons plays in Monkeys (Chair) with different material perceptions. The monkeys seem to be made of plastic , but this perception of the material contradicts the static demands on the sculpture. A chain of inflatable figures could not support a chair without loosening. The only information here is a look at the object sign. The floating lightness of the rubber monkeys is thus contrasted with the monumental weight of the materials wood and metal.
