The Monmouth Railway was a British railway company based in Gloucestershire , England .

history

The company received on May 24, 1810 the concession to build a horse-drawn railway line from the Howlers Slade mines in the Forest of Dean to Coleford and May Hill near Monmouth . The share capital was £ 22,000 divided into shares of £ 50 each. The 1067 mm (2 ft 6 in) track opened on August 17, 1812, but was not finally completed until 1817. After the decline of mining in the region around Coleford, the route was little used from 1850. In 1853 the company was acquired by the Coleford, Monmouth, Usk and Pontypool Railway , which established a crossing in Wyesham Wharf in 1857.

In 1883, the Coleford Railway built a standard gauge railway line between Monmouth and Coleford on the existing track bed .
