Emperor Mommu ( Japanese 文 武天皇 , Mommu-tennō ; * 683 ; † June 15, 707 ) was the 42nd Tennō of Japan . His proper name was Karu no miko (Prince Karu). He ruled from 697-707 in Fujiwara-kyō , today Kashihara , Nara Prefecture .

Life

Prince Karu was a son of Prince Kusakabe and Princess Ahe . His father was the Crown Prince Temmus , so Mommu is a grandson of Emperor Temmus and Empress Jitōs . His mother Ahe was a daughter of Emperor Tenji .

After Empress Jitō's abdication , his accession to the throne was announced on August 17, 697. He died 10 years later (707). His son Obito was still a child, so his mother took the throne until the child grew up.

The origins of the theater can be traced back to his reign.
