The Monogononta are a subclass of the rotifers (Rotatoria, Rotifera). They live mainly planktonic and move around with well-developed wheel organs. The name-giving characteristic of the group is its only gonad . The Monogononta have two polynuclear foot glands.

Reproduction

They go through a generation change in which an amictic, parthenogenetic female generation , which lay diploid eggs with two complete sets of chromosomes and only one polar body, and a mictic female generation, which lay haploid eggs with only one chromosome set and two polar bodies, alternate. Amictic females hatch from the fertilized, haploid eggs, from the unfertilized males, which are usually smaller than the females and usually only have an incomplete intestine without function. If a favorable biotope is repopulated or if the living conditions change for the better, the females can reproduce parthenogenetically over several generations for rapid colonization.

Internal system

A representative is, for example, Trichocerca .
