The genus Trichocerca belongs to the family Trichocercidae within the rotifers . The species are also referred to in German as the rat-tail rotifers .
description
The animals are twisted asymmetrically and therefore swim in helical lines. A striped field bordered by keels is located diagonally across the back . Either both toes are the same length, or the right toe has receded and the left toe is long.

- Tricocerca bicristata is approximately 550 micrometers in size and inhabits pools and ponds. The species can be found in spring and autumn.
- Tricocerca brachyura becomes approximately 190 micrometers long. The species lives in standing water and can be found in spring and late autumn.
- Tricocerca capucina reaches approximately 425 microns and is found in shallow waters.
- Tricocerca cylindrica is 430 to 640 micrometers in size and is found in the plankton of shallower waters in summer and autumn.
- Tricocerca inermis is a 260 to 300 micrometer large species that lives as a solitary among aquatic plants.
- Tricocerca longiseta reaches a size of 300 to 500 micrometers. The species occurs between plants in shallow waters in spring and autumn.
