Style of play

Furnishing

In addition to the instructions, the game consists of a game board, four playing figures (Super Mario, Peach, Donkey Kong and Yoshi), four role cards for the playing figures, four overview cards, eight boss cards, 16 ownership cards, a number die, a power-up die and 90 Coins. In the game, players collect points in the form of coins and cards. The game runs over eight rounds, at the end of which there is a boss fight. After the eighth fight, the game ends and the player with the most points wins.

Rules of the game

At the beginning of the game, the playing field is set up in the middle of the table. The boss cards are placed one on top of the other, starting with the number one, and placed on the board, and the ownership cards are placed next to the corresponding board spaces. Then each player chooses a pawn and receives the corresponding role card. All players place the pawn on the “Go” field on the game board. Each player also receives five coins with the value 1 and one coin with the value 5 as well as an overview card.

The players play clockwise and must roll the two dice at the beginning of their turn and choose which of the two dice they place first. The active player moves his pawn forward according to the number on the die and collects all the coins that are on the fields he moves over and lands on. Then he can take actions according to the field he landed on:

  • Free lots: If the player lands on a plot of land that does not yet belong to anyone, he can buy it or sell it. If he decides to buy, he pays the price on the ownership card and receives it. If he decides on an auction, he can place the first bid himself and then all players can increase the bid in clockwise direction or pass. The player with the highest bid gets the ownership card.
  • Plots already sold: If the player lands on a plot that has already been sold, he must pay the owner the rent indicated on the ownership card. If the owner has both cards of one color group, the rent is doubled. The landowner has to actively ask about the rent and only has time until the next player rolls the dice.
  • Pipe: If the player lands on a pipe, he may move to the next pipe on the game board and collect all the coins that he draws along the way. If he moves over LOS, he receives 2 coins and reveals the top boss card.
  • Coin field: If the player lands on the coin field, he may roll the number die and receive the displayed number in the form of coins.
  • Stone block: If the player lands on the stone block, he must place two coins on the field.
  • Superstar: If the player lands on the superstar, he activates the special ability of his character, which is described on the role card.
  • Prison / Visiting only: If the player lands in prison, he is only visiting here and may move on normally on the next turn.
  • Go to the prison: If the player lands on the “Go to the prison” space, he must move directly to the prison space and stay there until he meets the requirements for being released. While in prison, a player is not allowed to participate in boss fights. To get free, the player must either pay five coins to the bank before rolling the dice or throw a six when rolling the dice. If this fails in two throws, he may leave the prison on the third move. A player who is released from prison may take all coins on the “Visiting Only” field.
  • LOS: If a player comes to the LOS field or moves over it, he receives two coins and reveals the top boss card.

With the power-up die, a player can activate a special ability and his special ability when he rolls the corresponding symbol:

  • red turtle: If a player rolls the red turtle, any other player must place three coins on the space on which he is standing. If Princess Peach the red turtle rolls the dice, the player must discard four coins.
  • Green turtle: When a player rolls the green turtle, the player closest to the active player must place three coins on the space he is standing on. If Yoshi rolls the green turtle, he can choose whether the player closest in front of or behind him has to put down coins.
  • Blooper (Ink Spirit): If a player rolls the Blooper, he may take two coins from any other player.
  • POW block: When a player rolls the POW block, all players must each place a coin on the space they are currently standing on. If Donkey Kong rolls the POW block, all players must discard two coins.
  • Coins: When a player rolls the coins, he gets three coins from the bank. If Mario Peach rolls the coins, he receives four coins.

The coins appear twice on the die, all other symbols only once.

If a player cannot pay rent or an amount that he has to give up due to a special ability, he must sell land to the bank at the purchase value and use the proceeds to pay the debts. If a player has no land and no money, the debts expire.

Whenever a player draws via LOS, at the end of his turn he reveals a boss card and must pass a boss fight. To do this, the top boss card is revealed and placed in the center of the field. If the active player wants to carry out the boss fight, he pays the costs to the bank and then tries to complete the task on the boss card. If the player does not want to or cannot conduct the boss fight, he can pass and pass the fight on to the next player. With the simplest boss ("Larry") he must throw at least a three with the number die, with later bosses a four (Morton, Wendy, Iggy), five (Roy, Lemmy, Ludwig) or six (Bowser). If a player loses against the boss, the next player can take over the fight and the players fight until everyone has either passed or lost. The player who defeats the boss receives the card and the points indicated on it for the final scoring.

The game ends when the last boss has been defeated. The players count the points they have received from ownership cards and boss monsters and receive an additional 10 points for every five coins (excess coins expire). In the event of a tie, the player with the most lots and boss cards wins.
