Monroe Edward Palmer, Baron Palmer of Childs Hill OBE (born November 30, 1938 ) is a British politician of the Liberal Party and later the Liberal Democrats , who has been a member of the House of Lords since 2011 .

Life

Palmer was a certified accountant and most recently partner of the tax consultancy firm Silver Altman .

In the mid-1970s he began his political engagement with the Liberal Party and was its treasurer between 1977 and 1983. In the general election of May 3, 1979 , he ran for the Liberal Democrats in the constituency of Hendon South for the first time without success for a member of the House of Commons . Palmer, who became Officer of the Order of the British Empire in 1981 , later applied for a seat in the House of Commons in the general election of June 9, 1983 and on June 11, 1987 for the Liberal Party in the Hastings and Rye constituency, also unsuccessfully. In the mid-1980s he began his involvement in local politics and was a member of the council of the London Borough of Barnet for the first time from 1986 to 1994 . Between 1987 and 2010 he was also the chairman of the Liberal Democrat Friends of Israel , of which he has been vice-president since 2010.

Most recently, he ran in the elections of April 9, 1992 and May 1, 1997 for the Liberal Democrats in the constituency of Hastings and Rye , but missed each time again to enter the House of Commons. Since 1998 he has been a member of the council of the London Borough of Barnet again, where he has been chairman of the audit committee since 2010. He also served as Treasurer of the Liberal Democrats of London between 2008 and 2009 .

Palmer was raised to the nobility by a letters patent dated January 17, 2011 as a life peer entitled Baron Palmer of Childs Hill , of Childs Hill in the London Borough of Barnet . Shortly after its introduction was carried out ( Introduction ) as a member of the House of Lords .
