The Monroe Point is a headland in southwest Snow Iceland in the archipelago of the South Shetland Islands . It is located 5 km northwest of Cape Conway and represents the southern limit of the entrance to Barutin Cove .
Scientists from the British Discovery Investigations named it Low Point , but this name did not catch on. The UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee named it based on the naming of Snow Island as Monroe Island by sealers in the 1820s. This is probably the name of the sloop James Monroe , the ship of the US sealer captain Nathaniel Palmer , with whom he and his British counterpart George Powell discovered the South Orkney Islands in December 1821 .
