The Majella is a mountain range in Abruzzo in central Italy . It is on the border of the provinces of Chieti , Pescara and L'Aquila . Its highest peak, Monte Amaro, is the second highest peak in the Apennines at 2793 m and was first climbed in 1873. Other related peaks are the Monte Acquaviva ( 2737 m ), Monte Focalone ( 2676 m ), Monte Rotondo ( 2656 m ), Monte Macellaro ( 2646 m ), Pesco Falcone ( 2546 m ), Cima delle Murelle ( 2598 m ). The mountain groups of Monte Morrone, Monte Porrara and Monte Pizzi are adjacent.
The mountain range forms the center of the Majella National Park . It contains plateaus up to 2500 m high, deeply cut valleys and gorges, carved in by rivers such as the Orfento, the Foro and others. The Il Principiante ice waterfall at an altitude of 1,600 meters plunges 25 meters.
