Montrose Castle is a disused 12th century low castle on a hill in Montrose in the Scottish county of Angus .

history

Montrose was declared a Royal Burgh by King David I in the 12th century . The once royal castle was built as a Motte in 1178 . King Edward I of England accepted the task of Scotland at the castle from John Balliol on July 10, 1296 .

William Wallace destroyed the castle in 1297. In 1488, Montrose Castle was reported to be in ruins . Today nothing of it has survived.
