The Montrose Mausoleum is a mausoleum in the Scottish village of Aberuthven in the Council Area Perth and Kinross . In 1971 the structure was included in the Scottish monument lists in the highest monument category A.

history

Already in the Middle Ages which was St Kattan's Chapel built. The quarry stone building became obsolete in 1683 and is now only preserved as a ruin. The surrounding cemetery, enclosed by a quarry stone wall, was used until the 18th century. The Dukes of Montrose , who lived in Kincardineshire , had the Montrose Mausoleum built in the graveyard of St Kattan's Chapel in 1736. The Scottish architect William Adam is responsible for the design . James Graham, 3rd Duke of Montrose (1755–1836) is the last Duke to be buried there.

The Montrose Mausoleum is directly adjacent to St Kattan's Chapel, which stands on the western edge of the small town. It has a square floor plan. The entrance area is designed in the style of a Venetian window with Ionic pilasters . Originally the final pyramid roof was covered with stone slabs. However, after the roof had proven to be leaky, today's slate roofing was arranged. A sculptured urn rests on the top of the roof.
