The Serra de Montsant is a mountain range in the Comarca Priorat of the autonomous community of Catalonia ( Spain ) and is part of the Catalan pre-coastal mountains. The Montsant wine-growing region lies on the slopes of the mountains .
location
The massif lies between the Siurana River and the Montsant River . It covers an area of 135 km² and extends 17 kilometers from northeast to southwest.
geology
The mountain range is steeply rising in the southeast, rugged and rocky and has several peaks of over 1000 meters. The highest point is the Roca Corbatera (1163 meters). In the gently sloping north-west, numerous small rivers have formed deep valleys before they flow into the Montsant River. There are numerous caves in the karst landscape.
Parc Natural del Montsant
In 2002, a nature park with an area of 9,242 ha was established in part of the mountain range .
vegetation
In the dry rocky areas, low vegetation consisting of herbs and bushes with individual pines dominates . In the southwest the vegetation is denser and consists of hazelnut bushes , holly and yew trees . On the banks of the rivers there are poplars , ash trees and willows .
fauna
Many rare species of mammals such as wild cats , lynxes , martens and birds of prey such as the peregrine falcon , Bonelli's eagle and golden eagle are native here. There are also many species of birds , amphibians and lizards .
