Sri Mooji

Mooji , actually Anthony Paul Moo-Young (born January 29, 1954 in Port Antonio , Jamaica ), is an Advaita teacher.

Life

Mooji moved from Jamaica to Brixton (London) in 1969 at the age of 16 to live with his mother, who had lived in London since he was one year old. He initially earned his living as a street portrait painter. He later worked as an artist with stained glass and painting. He was also an art teacher at Brixton College for a while.

In 1987 there was an encounter with a young Christian named Michael, whom he describes as a mystic. This is said to have changed his life decisively. Mooji soon stopped teaching and began a life of "quiet simplicity". He engaged in self-exploration according to the teachings of Sri Ramana Maharshi and the writings of Sri Ramakrishna .

In 1993 Mooji traveled to India, where he became a student of HWL Poonja and studied the Advaita Vedanta teachings. He and his Sangha (community) have lived in Portugal since 2011. Satsangs and retreats are held regularly and there are several books that convey his knowledge.

Teaching

The Mooji scriptures and satsangs deal with a non-dual state that arises when all efforts to maintain an identity are abandoned. A radical questioning of what is meant by “ I ” releases the subject from its restrictive and reality-distorting perspectives and allows it to recognize its original connection with and as being. For Mooji, well-being, freedom and peace are not qualities that have to be attained with difficulty, but already existing qualities of our existence that are only obscured by dichotomies, polarities and separations, above all by the subject-object division .
