Mooncry is a German metal band from the Lake Constance area, founded in 2006 . The band is assigned to Dark Melodic Metal . Mooncry combine modern metal with "offensive keyboards" and a style that can be classified between calm and euphoria, and is sometimes "melancholic and then aggressive". In contrast to many symphonic metal bands, they do not rely on female vocals, but have a front man in Sali Hasan.

history

The guitarist and songwriter Berthold "Berti" Miller founded Mooncry in 2006. At the end of 2006 the entire band was together and began to arrange the demos that Miller had worked out for the first album / demo.

In the winter of 2007 the band went to the Mediabase Studios of Jürgen Plangger (including Eisbrecher ) in Geretsried to record . The band's first work was called Legacy of Hope , and received mixed reviews. Critics complained that the first publication was too early after the band was founded, which meant that the result was too immature and indecisive. The title track Legacy of Hope was on Legacy magazine's sampler.

In November 2007 the band played their first live concert at the Musikmesse in Friedrichshafen. A few more concerts followed.

In the summer of 2009, Bernd Ummenhofer announced that he was leaving Mooncry for private reasons. He was replaced by the interim session bassist Alexander Schwenk, who joined the band in early 2010.

About the turn of the year 2009/2010 Mooncry recorded their second album. Rivers of Heart was produced in the Empire Studios by Rolf Munkes (Tony Martin / Ex-Black Sabbath, among others). Uwe Jarling designed the cover. The opener of the album Seconds in Time was again on the sampler of Legacy magazine.

In July 2010 the band signed a worldwide distribution agreement with Twilight.

Mooncry played a few concerts until 2011. In May 2011, the band played at the Helvetia Metalfest alongside genre greats such as Arch Enemy, Amorphis and Sabaton. This concert was filmed which resulted in two video clips of the songs Rivers of Heart and Memories Drowning . In mid-2011, CMM, a large German independent promotion label (including Iron Maiden, Slayer, Black Sabbath ...), became aware of Mooncry and the band signed a new distribution contract with its SAOL division. Rivers of Heart was republished on SAOL on October 21, 2011. The re-release was followed by numerous press reviews. The album was discussed in the magazines RockHard (7/10 points), MetalHammer (4/7 points) and RockIt (7.5 / 10 points) and received three positive reviews in all of them.

In January 2012 the heavy magazine "Stormbringer" selected the album Rivers of Heart as the best album of 2011, and Mooncry as one of the two surprises of 2011.

The song Among the Fallen Leaves appeared in the winter of 2012/2013 on the sampler Gothic Spirits 15 , the song Hopeless Play at around the same time on the sampler Gothic Romance 5 . On these samplers, Mooncry ranks among many of their role models such as B. Nightwish and Sentenced a.

In summer 2013 the third album A Mirror's Diary was produced and released on December 6, 2013 via SAOL. It was recorded again at Empire Studios and produced by Rolf Munkes. In addition to nine new songs, the song Angel of Darkness from the first album Legacy of Hope was completely re-recorded. The reviews were very positive. For example, the album received excellent reviews from the online magazines Metalunderground (5/5 points), Crossfire-Metal (9.5 / 10 points) and She-Wolf (10/10).

At the beginning of 2014 the album A Mirror's Diary was voted number 3 of the ten best albums of 2013 by the heavy magazine "Crossfire-Metal".

In May 2014, Mooncry received the title "Masters of Symphonic Metal" and performed with Edenbridge, Leaves' Eyes and Delain at the festival of the same name.

In August 2014 Mooncry announced that drummer Peter Zimre had left the band due to organizational problems (studies and other projects). After a short time, a successor could be found in Philipp "Phil" Zeller.

In July 2015 Mooncry performed at the Metaldays festival in Slovenia, alongside bands such as Saxon , Fear Factory , Queensrÿche and Devin Townsend Project. At the end of 2015 the band took part in the "Masters of Symphonic Metal" again, this time together with Beyond the Black and Masterplan .

At the beginning of 2016, the heavy magazine "Metal over the South" selected the album A Mirror's Diary as album of the year 2015. In September 2016, Mooncry entered the Cashbox US National Airplay Top 50 Rock Charts at number 26 with the song The Beast Within Me and placed in the following 2 weeks in front of bands and artists like Disturbed , Marilyn Manson , Beck and Volbeat in 16th place.

style

The style of Mooncry is called Dark Melodic Metal by the relevant press .

In various interviews with Mooncry you can read that founder Berthold Miller originally wanted to mix symphonic power metal with deep and rough male vocals. The style that Mooncry present today fits this original project. While the first disc was a lot more dignified and “poppier” and much more influenced by Gothic, the last two albums come across as a mixture of power, symphonic and thrash metal. The current album A Mirror's Diary is even harder than its predecessor, which is achieved on the one hand by the much more powerful production and on the other hand by the higher basic tempo combined with the rougher and more aggressive vocals of Sali Hasan.
