Athletic career
The athlete, who started for the Altius Pärnu sports club, was first Estonian champion in 1995 with a width of 48.82 meters. Aava were able to defend the title in the following year. At the Junior World Championships in Sydney in 1996 , she was eliminated from the qualification and took 16th place with a width of 49.44 meters. Later that year, she sustained an elbow injury that disabled her for the next two years. After the condition of the competition javelin was changed in 1999 and all old record lists were deleted, Aava secured the Estonian landing record for the first time on May 15, 1999 with a width of 52.35 meters. However, this was clearly exceeded on September 2, 1999 by Ruth Väät with a width of 55.79 meters. In 2000 Moonika Aava won her third Estonian championship. In June 2001 it won back the Estonian record with a width of 57.98 meters, thrown at a meeting in Tartu . In July of this year she started at the U23 European Championships in Amsterdam , where she won the bronze medal with a width of 56.12 meters. As in 2001, she successfully defended the Estonian Championship in 2002. In June 2003 she improved the Estonian record to 59.45 meters. In August 2004, she increased the record at the Estonian Championships in Tallinn to 61.42 meters. At the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens , however, they could not confirm this performance and retired with a width of 54.96 meters in qualification, which meant 33rd place in the final ranking. After becoming Estonian champion for the seventh time in 2005, she took part in the World Athletics Championships in Helsinki in 2005 , where she again failed significantly in qualifying. After the disappointing results, she devoted herself primarily to training as a police officer. In 2008 she was also the best Estonian javelin thrower with an annual record of 59.88 meters and thus qualified for the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing . With a width of 56.94 meters, however, Aava again fell short of expectations and was eliminated as twelfth of their qualifying group in the preliminary fight. In the end result, she took 26th place. Aava achieved her best international result so far in March 2009 at the European Winter Throwing Cup in Los Realejos , where she finished second with 60.76 meters. At the World Athletics Championships in Berlin in 2009 , she was eliminated in qualification with a throw of 53.86 meters.
