Mooser ponds
The Mooser ponds are located in the Vogelsberg in the area of the communities Freiensteinau and Grebenhain . Most of the ponds were created for fish farming in the 16th century under the rule of the Riedesel family . These are the following waters:
- Nieder-Mooser pond near Nieder-Moos
- Ober-Mooser ponds near Ober-Moos
- Reichlos pond at Reichlos
- Rothenbachteich between Bermuthshain and Ober-Moos
With the exception of the Nieder-Mooser pond (also known colloquially as Nieder-Mooser See ), which is used by tourism, all Mooser ponds are designated as nature reserves . They represent a breeding area and resting place for numerous bird species. The Ober-Mooser Teich and the Reichlos Teich have been owned by the NABU State Association of Hesse since 2000 and form the NABU protected area "Vogelsbergteiche".
