Moppel puke

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Moppelkotze is a simple stew widespread in northern Germany with an unspecified recipe. According to a few recipes, it is made from potatoes, pickles and corned beef or from braised white cabbage and minced meat - similar to Labskaus . In Berlin , moppel puke is often understood to mean a stew made from green beans and beef in cans, ingredients that were available at low cost in West Berlin during the time of the Wall thanks to the “rolling” of the Senate Reserve ; Colloquially, the word can also mean meat salad .

The origin of the name is unclear. Possibly Moppel goes back to the Low German mopen , "open your mouth, forgive", Kotze in Middle High German Koppen , "belch, burp".

The name is also used colloquially for disgusting or undesirable things. The NDR satirical magazine extra 3 made a contribution to this : In an irregularly recurring section, the show with the Klaus (a parody of Die Sendung mit der Maus ), the expression “Moppelkotze” is used synonymously with “nonsensical” or “stupid”.
