Largest pure fresh water source in Nauru |

The Moqua Well ( Fountain of Makwa , moque Well, Mekua well or Makwa well) is only about 0.2 ha large underground lake , located in the Nauruan District Yaren located. Right next door is the runway of Nauru International Airport . The lake is located in the Moqua Cave ( cave ), a depression in the limestone soil of the central plateau, which is lower than the groundwater of the higher central plateau, so that the groundwater flows into the cave and forms a small lake. There is no connection to the Buada lagoon , which is about 700 meters further north in Buada .
The lake contains fresh water and is the most important source of fresh water in the republic. During the Second World War , its water was used by the locals for drinking and washing, as there was very little food on Nauru due to the occupation of the Japanese army . Today the Moqua Well is a small neglected attraction , one of the few attractions in Nauru; however, it is often visited by the few tourists in Nauru.
Many locals like to stay there during the hot midday sun; Even drunk people used the lake to cool off. In 2001 such an alcoholic drowned, whereupon the area around the Moqua Well was cordoned off in order to avoid such fatal incidents. However, there are still people who disregard the cordon. Until a few years ago, water was taken from the Moqua Well for flush toilets in government buildings.
