The International Airport of the Republic of Nauru ( Republic of Nauru International Airport ) is the only airport of the island state of Nauru . It is located in the southwest of the island in the districts of Yaren and Boe .

history

The airport was about 1,500 in January 1943 Japanese and Korean workers and another 300 Nauruern and Kiribatiern built when Nauru in World War II by the Japanese army occupied. The airport, which at that time comprised of asphalt - Runway and Tower was served primarily to better transport troops and material between Nauru and Japan.

With the independence of Naurus in 1968 and the establishment of Air Nauru in 1970, the airport was modernized and expanded for passenger and cargo traffic. There is currently a passenger terminal , a cargo terminal, two aircraft stands, two gates , three check-in platforms, an airport hotel , a bank , a few restaurants with a VIP lounge and a snack bar . The cargo facilities include a warehouse and a freezer store. The only runway ( Runway 12/30 ) is 2150 meters long and suitable for a Boeing 737-400 at most .

The airport is currently only served by Nauru Airlines (formerly Air Nauru); earlier the state airline of the Marshall Islands ( Air Marshall Islands ) operated a connection.
