The districts do not play a major role. The borders are the former borders of the former Gaue , which until 1968 consisted of a few villages; these in turn are made up of properties that were owned by families and are still today. With the independence of Naurus, the Gaue became today's districts.
Yaren as the so-called Main District and Aiwo are also the two most important districts internationally, as the government buildings and the most important industries are located here and most of the residents live here.
