Administrative division of Tonga
The administrative structure of Tonga is based on the division into divisions ( Tongan ngaahi vahe ) at the highest level. This is each a governor ( governor before). These divisions are in turn into districts ( ngaahi vahefonua ), each of which is administered by a district administrator ( District Officers ; kau ʻofisa fakavahefonua ). The smallest administrative unit are the villages ( ngaahi kolo ), of which there are 155 (as of September 2017). In them the administrative chairmanship is incumbent on the town administrators ( Town Officers ; kau ʻofisa kolo ). Elections must be held every three years.
A distinction is also made (as of September 2017) between 170 populated and 7 uninhabited villages.
In addition, the kingdom is divided into 17 constituencies ( constituencies ), which in turn are used in censuses in Tonga .
