Vavaʻu is a group of islands belonging to the Kingdom of Tonga .

geography

The Vava'u group measures approx. 21 km from east to west and 25 km from north to south. As of the 2006 census, 17 of the 34 upscale and densely overgrown islands were inhabited. Vavaʻu has (as of 2016) 13,740 inhabitants. The main island Vavaʻu is the second largest island in Tonga with 89.74 square kilometers .

Vavaʻu is a sloping coral reef with cliffs up to 200 m high in the north. On the south side, the archipelago dissolves into many small waterways and islets. The largest of these waterways, the fjord-like Ava Pulepulekai Channel, extends 11 km inland to the port of Neiafu , the only town in Vavaʻu.

The archipelago is divided into six administrative districts: Neiafu (capital: Neiafu), Pangaimotu (Pangaimotu), Hahake ( Taʻanea ), Leimatuʻa ( Leimatuʻa ), Hihifo ( Longomapu ), Motu ( Hunga ).

economy

Due to its scenic beauty, Vavaʻu is particularly popular with sailors and other tourists and one of the most important tourist centers in Tonga. From May to October, the port of Vavaʻu is the destination of sailing boats from all over the world. In addition to the island's beauty, the nearby humpback whales that give birth to their young and the diving underwater caves are outstanding attractions.

In addition to tourism , agriculture and fishing are the main sources of income for the population. The vanilla grown here is among the best in the world. There are also extensive plantations with coconut palms . In addition, even giant clams and pearls bred.

The Vava'u airport is located seven kilometers from the main town of Neiafu and is regularly visited by Real Tonga served, which offers connections to other islands.
