Morar ( Scottish Gaelic Mórar ) is a village on the Scottish west coast with about 250 inhabitants. It is located in the Highland Council Area about three kilometers south of Mallaig .
Morar was not created until 1901 as part of the construction of the West Highland Line that connects Fort William with Mallaig. Accordingly, Morar has a train station despite its small size.
Nowadays Morar lives mainly from tourism . The tourists come mainly because of the scenic road Road to the Isles leading through the village and because of the Silver Sands of Morar, which is right on the outskirts . This is a particularly picturesque stretch of coast around the mouth of the Morar River , the sand of which shines silvery in the sunshine. Much of the beach scenes in Local Hero were shot there. On the outskirts there is a hydroelectric power station in which electricity is generated using the water from the Morar.
In Morar there is a larger hotel as well as several guest houses and holiday homes. The village can be reached by bus directly from Fort William and is connected to Glasgow by train without having to change trains .
