Mordechai Ish Shalom ( Hebrew מרדכי איש שלום= Mordechai "man of peace", born. as "Mordechai Friedmann"; * January 2, 1901 ; † February 21, 1991 ) was an Israeli politician ( Mapai ) and mayor of Jerusalem from 1959 to 1965 .

Life

Isch Schalom was born in Lithuania in 1901 under the name Mordechai Friedmann as the third of five children. In 1923 he immigrated to what was then the British Mandate of Palestine . In 1950 he was elected to the City Council of Jerusalem for the Mapai and in 1955 he was Deputy Mayor Gershon Agron , before he finally became mayor himself in 1959. After he was ousted from 2nd place on the joint list of Mapai and Rafi in the 1969 elections , he withdrew his candidacy and did not run again.
