Tilbeck Murder Cross

The Tilbeck Murder Cross is a listed atonement cross on the southwestern boundary of Havixbeck , district of Tilbeck . It is located between the Nottulner district of Schapdetten and Tilbeck Abbey .

The cross commemorates the murder of a "Meierschen" from Tilbeck. According to legend, the woman was robbed and murdered by mercenaries after visiting a restaurant . They had seen the later victim rummaging in a full bag for money in the inn and therefore ambushed her in the hope of rich booty. However, the bag only contained nails. The cross, which was moved a few meters in the course of the road expansion, now stands right at the beginning of the Baumberger Ludgerusweg ravine . It is badly weathered and dates from 1164, but was renewed (reboriret) in 1764. The inscription, as far as it can still be deciphered, reads as follows:

          INRI

 ANNO 1164 ALDA BI DIG
CRe.IST.RebORHReT.DAS.AL=
=HIeeINeMeIRSCHe.TILBICK
         VeRMOR
         DeT IST

The cross is made of Baumberger sandstone and is enthroned on a two-tiered base. The lower plinth is made of concrete and comes from the implementation in the course of road construction. The upper plinth, on the other hand, is likely to date from the renovation period (1764). The cross is attached to it with iron brackets.
