Morgan (bishop)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Morgan (also Morgan Bloet ) (* after 1175; † 1217 ) was an English clergyman. He was elected Bishop of Durham , but the election was not recognized.

Morgan Bloet was an illegitimate son of King Henry II of England from an affair with the Welsh nobles Nest Bloet . His mother was a Welsh princess who had married the Anglo-Norman nobleman Ralph Bloet . It is believed that the King had met Nest during a visit to Gloucester in 1175 . Morgan grew up in his parents' household. He became a clergyman and eventually provost of Beverley Minster . After the death of Bishop John de Gray , he was elected bishop of the Diocese of Durham between March 7 and May 7, 1215 through the influence of his half-brother King Johann Ohneland . Morgan now traveled to Rome to obtain confirmation of his election from the Pope. Pope Innocent III had to refuse the choice, however, when Morgan did not want to deny his illegitimate parentage to the Curia and insisted on being a son of Henry II. The Pope offered him another benefice of his choice to replace him , but Morgan returned to England disappointed. He resigned from his church offices in 1216 or 1217 and died shortly afterwards.
