Coordinates: 20 ° 43 ′ S , 139 ° 29 ′ E The Shire of Mornington is a local government area (LGA) in the Australian state of Queensland . The area is 1248 km² and has about 1150 inhabitants.
geography
The Shire consists of an archipelago in the Gulf of Carpentaria with the main island of Mornington . It is about 1850 km from the capital Brisbane .
Most of the residents live in Gununa on the main island, where the administrative headquarters are also located. Almost 90% of the population are Aboriginal .
history
The Wellesley Islands were initially exclusively settled by the indigenous people. In 1914 a mission was opened on the main island. The Mornington Shire and local government was introduced in 1978.
administration
The Mornington Shire Council has five members. The Mayor and four other Councilors are elected by all residents of the Shire. The LGA is not divided into electoral districts.
