The Morpheus Hotel is located in the Macau Special Administrative Region of China . The building was designed by Zaha Hadid and is located in the so-called City of Dreams , a resort with a casino .
Construction phase
In 2009 the City of Dreams was opened in a central location in Macau. In 2012, the architects Zaha Hadid joined the project and developed the plans for the Morpheus Hotel building. Completion in 2018 was set as the target. The hotel opened as scheduled on June 15, 2018.
building
The construction of the 160 meter high structure consists of two opposing reinforced concrete towers that are connected to each other on the lower and upper floors, and the outside of a free-form exoskeleton clad with aluminum panels . This made it possible to largely dispense with load-bearing walls and supports in the interior. The external steel structure is arranged in front of the glass facade. It has largely no horizontal components and consists of hollow profiles. In the middle part of the building, the exoskeleton forms two bridges. Between these there are three holes of different shapes and sizes.
According to the architects, this shape of the building is inspired by the formal language of Chinese jade carving . It also has the advantage that the majority of the rooms are equipped with windows.
The building was partly built on a foundation from a building originally planned on this site. This had piles 35 meters long and 2.4 meters in diameter. The 3 meter thick pile head plates had to be adapted and piles with a diameter of 2.8 meters added. The British engineering company Happold planned the structure.
Furnishing
The Morpheus Hotel is a luxury hotel with the most modern facilities. There is a spacious atrium in the lower area . The 40 floors can be reached with twelve glass high-speed elevators. There are restaurants and bars in the bridges in the middle segment , including Chinese cuisine , but top European chefs such as Alain Ducasse also operate restaurants in the hotel. The 772 rooms, including 181 suites and six villas , were designed by Remedios Studio from Hong Kong . The hotel also has a collection of modern art , a gym , a spa area and a pool area on the roof of the building.
