The Morse class was a submarine - class of the French Navy . The two boats, like the Farfadet and Sirène class submarines, were built in response to the Faschoda crisis .

The construction of the two single-hulled boats was funded by a national fundraiser organized by the newspaper Le Matin .

The two submarines were decommissioned shortly before the start of the First World War .
