The Farfadet class was a submarine - class of the French Navy . As a result of the Faschoda crisis , the French submarine fleet was expanded around 1900. At the same time as the four Farfadet-class submarines, the Sirène- and Morse-class submarines were built.
Surname
Farfadet is a specific type of leprechaun in French fairy tales and folk stories. Accordingly, the boats of this class were named after other types of goblins, e.g. B. Lutin .
Details
The building contract was awarded on September 26, 1899. The single hull boats designed by M. Maugas were built in Rochefort between 1899 and 1903 .
The Farfadet class was not a successful design and was withdrawn from active service very quickly.
The Farfadet sank at Bizerta on July 5, 1905 . 14 French seamen were killed in the accident. With British help, the boat was lifted and put back into service in September 1909 under the name Follet . The Lutin sank on October 16, 1906, was also lifted again, but was taken out of service shortly afterwards.
