Mortal Engines (novel)
Mortal Engines is the first of four novels from Philip Reeves' tetralogy Predator Cities . The story takes place in a futuristic steampunk version of London . In the meantime, the cities are mounted on gigantic engines and drive over the earth in search of raw materials to survive. The book won the Nestlé Smarties Book Prize in 2002 .
Explanation of the title
The title is a quote from the 3rd act, III. Scene from the tragedy Othello by William Shakespeare ("Othello: And O you mortal engines whose rude throats / Th'immortal Jove's dread clamors counterfeit ..." - line 352).
filming
In December 2009, the New Zealand film producer Peter Jackson announced that he was planning a film based on the novel. WingNut Films started working on the film on October 25, 2016. The screenplay was written by Peter Jackson, his wife Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens . Director is Christian Rivers . The film was released in German cinemas on December 13, 2018.
