The mosque of ʿAmr ibn al-ʿĀs ( Arabic جامع عمرو بن العاص, DMG Ǧāmiʿ ʿAmr b. al-ʿĀṣ ) or al-Fath Mosque ( Arabic مسجد الفتح, DMG Masǧid al-Fatḥ  , Mosque of the [Arab] Conquest ') was laid out in the year 642/643 (22 AH ) in what is now the northeast of the city of Damiette by the general ʿAmr ibn al-ʿĀs . It is the second mosque to be built in Egypt and in all of Africa . Today's appearance no longer corresponds to the original building.

On behalf of the caliph ʿUmar ibn al-Chaṭṭāb , the general ʿAmr ibn al-ʿĀṣ, coming from Syria , attacked 639 what was then Byzantine Egypt . After the conquest of Pelusium in northern Sinai and the fortress Babylon / Qa ar asch-Schamʿ and the founding of al-Fustat , he had another mosque built in Damiette next to the mosque in al-Fustat.

The mosque has an eventful history. Founded as a mosque was twice during the Crusades in a church in honor of St. Virgin converted, for the first time in 1219 under Johann von Brienne and for the second time in 1249 under Louis IX. It was later used as a mosque again and expanded in the Mamluk and Ottoman times.

In 2009 the restoration of the mosque was completed.

Building description

Today's mosque is a rectangular courtyard mosque, whose courtyard, Sahn , is surrounded by arcades, riwaqs . The arcade halls have two aisles on three sides and four aisles on the south side. The prayer niche is located in the southeast corner . The wooden ceilings of the arcades have no decoration. Located on the outer walls a revolving wooden band with Koran - Suren .

The only historical part of the mosque is the minaret to the west of the mosque.
