Świętokrzyski Bridge

The Świętokrzyski Bridge ( Polish Most Świętokrzyski , German Holy Cross Bridge ) is the first single-hip cable - stayed bridge in Warsaw , built between 1998 and 2000. It forms a distant extension of Świętokrzyska Street and connects the central parts of Warsaw on both sides Vistula banks .

description

The bridge with the viaduct is 479 meters long, has two lanes in each direction and two lanes for pedestrian and bicycle traffic. The construction of the bridge, suspended from a 90 meter high pylon , is supported by 48 steel cables. The pylon stands on the right bank of the Vistula. The deck girder is also supported on two pillars in the Vistula river near the left bank. A service elevator is located inside the northern pylon. Since the bridge carriageway is just above the level of the previous Vistula boulevards, the road traffic on the left bank of the river was laid in a double tunnel , 930 meters long in the south and 889 meters in the north. This resulted in a cross- traffic-free crossing on two levels, but at the same time made it impossible to access and exit the road on the left bank of the Vistula to the bridge. The Copernicus Science Center was later built on top of the tunnel .

Establishment

The construction was co-financed by the construction company Elektrim, who planned to build a group of apartment houses on the former port area. Financial difficulties led to the extension of the construction work for the residential buildings, as well as the establishment of a direct connection to Targowa Street in the center of the Praga district . On the left, the only access is through the steep and narrow Tamka Street. The insufficient width of the bridge decks and the excessive width of the hard shoulder are criticized.

More bridges across the Vistula

In the years 2000 to 2002, another cable-stayed bridge was built in Warsaw - the Siekierkowski Bridge in the south of the city. A third new bridge - the Północny Bridge (North Bridge, officially Marie Curie Skłodowska Bridge ) - was built in 2009–2012 with a traditional beam construction.
