According to tradition, it was founded in 922 by the two monks Guterre and Ausindo Soares. From 938 on, they were subject to the Augustine rule. In 1112 the monastery was moved to its current location, but the new church was only consecrated in 1235 by the Bishop of Porto, D. Pedro Salvador. In the early 16th century, the monastery was reduced to rubble and in 1535 King John III approved . the transfer to the Serra de São Nicolau in Gaia . However, not all monks agreed to the relocation, and so in 1566 Pope Pius V ordered the two monasteries to be run separately.

With the return of the monks, a comprehensive structural renovation took place. In 1572 the architect Francisco Velasquez , builder of the Cathedral of Miranda do Douro , was commissioned. Two years later, on June 28, 1574, the first stone of the dormitory was laid. Around 1600 two wings of the cloister, the refectory and the chapter house were completed. The construction of the church, however, dragged on for almost thirty years. In the course of the radical reforms of the Marquês de Pombal , the monastery was dissolved in 1770, and its assets were transferred to the monastery of Mafra .

In the monastery is the grave of Rodrigo Sanches , the illegitimate son of King Sancho I and his lover, Maria Pais de Ribeira.
