Mosterton is a village and at the same time a rural parish ( Civil Parish ) in the county of Dorset , England with, as of 2014, 636 inhabitants.

geography

Mosterton is in the north-west of Dorset on the border with County Somerset , about halfway between the small towns of Beaminster in the south and Crewkerne in the north, both of which are about three miles away. The place arose as a street village along the A 3066 , which crosses the river Ax , which rises a few kilometers to the east .

The area of ​​the district is 4.62 square kilometers. Neighboring parishes are, starting to the north and going clockwise, Misterton, already in Somerset, as well as South Perrott, Beaminster, Broadwindsor and Seaborough.

history

The Domesday Book from the eleventh century gives 18 households for Mortestorne , Richard de Redvers is given as the owner of the village . The family of Thomas More was among the landlords who followed him . The place name, which comes from Old English , refers to a thorn-reinforced tree and its owner Mort , but possibly also to the fact that this tree caused a death.

Buildings

In Mosterton a total of thirteen buildings are classified as culturally and historically significant and listed buildings , all in Category II. Among these are a pub named after Admiral Hood and St. Mary's Church, built in 1833 as a branch of South Perrott. It has the peculiarity that the stained glass windows from 1975 behind the altar have agricultural motifs, e.g. B. show a combine harvester and a tractor .
