The Motor Vehicle Accident (MVA) Fund (in German about traffic accident fund ) is a state-owned company in Namibia . It was established in 1991 on the basis of the Motor Vehicle Accident Fund Act, 1990 and is subordinate to the Department of Public Works and Transport .
The main task of the MVA Fund is the planning and implementation of traffic accident prevention measures and the compensation of traffic accident victims and their dependents. It represents a kind of motor vehicle liability insurance .
Finances
The MVA Fund is financed by a tax on fuel (0.477 Namibia dollars per liter; as of 2017), so that every vehicle driver makes an indirect contribution. The assets of the fund are given (as of 2017) at more than one billion Namibian dollars .
Compensation payments
The MVA Fund knows five different types of compensation:
- Medical support: Up to 1.5 million Namibian dollars for emergency medical aid and rehabilitation
- Injury Compensation: Up to $ 100,000 for injuries directly related to the accident
- Burial grant: 7000 Namibia dollars for the burial of a road accident victim
- Income support: Up to 100,000 Namibian dollars for loss of income due to reduced labor
- Allowance support: Up to 100,000 Namibia dollars for dependents of an accident victim in the event of the death of the person providing care
