Mount Black is a prominent and 3005 m high mountain in the East Antarctic Ross Dependency . In the Queen Maud Mountains it forms part of a terrain level immediately west of the Bennett Platform and the upper section of the Shackleton Glacier .
The American polar explorer Richard Evelyn Byrd discovered and photographed him on his return flight from the geographic South Pole in November 1929. He named him after his friend, the American newspaper publisher and aviation pioneer Van Lear Black (1876-1930), owner of the Baltimore Sun , who financially supported Byrd's first two Antarctic expeditions ( 1928–1930 and 1933–1935).
