The Mount Canobolas is the highest mountain in the Central Tablelands of New South Wales in Australia with a height of 1397 meters above sea level. The volcanic mountain is located 13 kilometers southwest of Orange and 250 kilometers from Sydney in the protected Mount Canobolas State Conservation Area .

history

Mount Canobolas is the traditional land of the Wiradjuri Aborigines , from whom the name of Mount Gaahna Bulla comes, which means two shoulders for the two peaks ( Old Man Canobolas and Young Man Canobolas ). The mountain area is used for the initiation ceremonies of the male Wiradjuri and was important for the manufacture of stone tools and the harvest of edible and medicinal plants.

The first European to climb the mountain in 1835 was Major Thomas Livingstone Mitchell .

geology

The Mount Canobolas is an extinct volcano in a large volcanic area. Three volcanic eruptions occurred 13 to 11 million years ago and lava flowed over an area of ​​800 km², while the second and third eruptions were more explosive, but the lava had a different chemical composition and was therefore thicker and flowed less far.

A volcanic complex was formed in the area around the mountain, in which around 50 diatrems , rock dikes , volcanic craters and volcanic domes were formed.

The Mount Canobolas is because of its geological been placed under national protection significance.

Flora and fauna

There are over 300 plants in the reserve, including two endemic eucalyptus ( Eucalyptus canobolensis and Eucalyptus saxicola ).

Around 95 animal species have been observed in the mountain area such as tree creepers , honeyeater , magpie , rosella , kangaroos and wallabies .

The climate on the mountain is somewhat more moderate than in the surrounding landscape. In winter the mountain is often covered with snow.

There are seven hiking trails and the summit offers a panoramic view. On the northern slopes of this mountain there is fertile volcanic soil that enables viticulture.

The summit has been built on with television and telecommunications broadcasting stations from Airservices Australia , Royal Australian Air Force , Prime Television , WIN Television , Australian Broadcasting Corporation and Southern Cross Ten .
