Mount Dixon (Heard)

Mount Dixon is a snowy and 705  m (according to Australian data 670  m ) high mountain on the island of Heard in the Indian Ocean . It rises 1.1 km west of Anzac Peak on the Laurens Peninsula .

This mountain is roughly mapped for the first time on a sketch by the US seal catcher captain H. C. Chester, who was operating in these waters at the time. Scientists from the Australian National Antarctic Research Expeditions (ANARE) carried out the survey and the naming in 1948. Namesake is Lieutenant Commander George Manley Dixon (1898-1988) of the Royal Australian Naval Volunteer Reserve , commander of the ship HMAS Labuan , which 1948 and 1949 was active in the service of ANARE.
