The Mount Garat is the largest and most active of the intra-caldera volcanoes in the crater of the volcano island of Gaua in Vanuatu . It is located on the southwestern shore of Lake Letas crater lake . The summit of Mount Garat is occupied by three pit craters . There are a few more different cinder cones in the lake .
In 1962 a long dormant phase of the volcano ended when a crevice opened on the southeast flank. Since then, there have been minor eruptions on Mount Garat. Strong eruptions caused the island's population to flee again and again.
Signs of an imminent eruption here are a rise in the water level and increased water temperatures. The color of the water can also vary, which is caused by volcanic gases . These also heat the water. The rise in water levels may be due to magma intrusion that raises the bottom of the body of water.
