Mount Hopeful is a 700 m high mountain on King George Island in the archipelago of the South Shetland Islands . It rises 2.5 km north of the head end of King George Bay and 2.5 km southeast of Rea Peak in the Arctowski Mountains .
The UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee named it in 1960 after the schooner Hopeful of the British whaling company Samuel Enderby & Sons , whose escort ship, the Cutter Rose , was crushed by the pack ice in late 1833 or in January 1834 at 60 ° 17 ′ S , 53 ° 26 ′ W became and went down. Although the crew was rescued alive, the Antarctic voyage was canceled immediately afterwards.
