The Rea Peak is a 590 m high mountain on King George Iceland in the archipelago of the South Shetland Islands . It rises 3 km northeast of Rose Peak and 2.5 km northwest of Mount Hopeful in the center of the island.
The UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee named him in 1960 after Henry Kean Rea (1797-1862), who succeeded John Biscoe as captain of the schooner Hopeful of the British whaling company Samuel Enderby & Sons , whose escort ship the Cutter Rose , in late 1833 or in January 1834 at 60 ° 17 ′ S , 53 ° 26 ′ W was crushed by the pack ice and went under. Although the crew was rescued alive, the Antarctic voyage was canceled immediately afterwards.
