A team led by the Australian geodesist and cartographer Robert George Dovers (1921-1981) sighted him in 1954 as part of the Australian National Antarctic Research Expeditions . The Antarctic Names Committee of Australia named it after Louis Edward Macey (1911-1986), technical director of Mawson station in 1954.
