It was discovered in December 1934 by the geological team of the second Antarctic expedition (1933–1935) of the US polar explorer Richard Evelyn Byrd . Byrd named him after the journalist Marvin H. McIntyre (1978-1943), a political advisor to US President Franklin D. Roosevelt .
