Mount Olsen is a snow-covered and 635 m (according to Australian data 580 m ) high mountain on the island of Heard in the Indian Ocean . It rises 300 m east of Hayter Peak on the Laurens Peninsula .
This mountain is roughly mapped for the first time on a sketch by the US seal catcher captain H. C. Chester, who was operating in these waters at the time. Scientists from the Australian National Antarctic Research Expeditions (ANARE) carried out the survey and the naming in 1948. It is named after Bjarne Olsen, first mate on the whaler Kidalkey , who operated in the waters around Heard Island in January 1929.
